GM Ignition Switch Recall Lawsuit

General Motors (GM) has paid out $280 million in compensation to victims who were injured in automobile crashes caused by a faulty ignition switch used in numerous GM vehicles. The company set aside a total of $625 million to settle claims where a faulty GM ignition switch led to a crash. Defective GM ignition switches have been the cause of hundreds of serious accidents and dozens of fatalities.

GM’s Faulty Ignition Switch

GM Ignition Switch Recall LawsuitThe faulty design of the ignition switch in some GM automobiles could potentially slip out of position and cut off power to the vehicle. When this happens the power to the brakes and power steering are also lost; this could lead to the driver losing control of the vehicle and vital safety features that only function when the vehicle is operational. Making this situation even more dangerous is the fact that the airbags will not deploy when the car is in this powerless state should there be a collision. Crashes occurring in the listed GM vehicles under these circumstances have led to numerous injuries and even some fatalities.

In 2014, General Motors (GM) issued several recalls on MILLIONS of vehicles to correct the defective ignition switches. At issue was a mechanism designed to keep the key in place when in the powered on position. The malfunction was leading to the ignition key slipping into the off position and cutting power to these GM vehicles. The GM recalls came too late for many, however, as these vehicles had been sold in the US since as early as the year 2001 with the Saturn Ion and other defective vehicles. In mid 2014 GM even performed its own internal probe into the delayed ignition switch recall and found a company-wide pattern of incompetence and neglect.
