FDA Issues Safety Communication Regarding Surgical Mesh
In October 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety communication regarding complications that had been reported with the use of surgical mesh to repair hernias. The complications reported to the FDA included: adverse reactions to the mesh, adhesions (when the loops of the intestines adhere to each other or the mesh), and injuries to nearby organs, nerves or blood vessels. The FDA stated that it was important for patients to report complications associated with hernia mesh to its MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program.
