NFL Concussion Settlement Information

nfl concussion lawsuit settlementThe U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear appeals from a small group of former NFL players who opposed the NFL Concussion Settlement Agreement. This means that the settlement agreement can become effective immediately. The settlement covers more than 20,000 former players and could be worth well over $1 billion when all is said and done. The agreement would provide payments of up to $5 million to players who have one of a handful of neurological disorders. Medical monitoring for all players to determine if they qualify for payment is also included in the agreement as well as money for education about concussions. Retired players who could be awarded the most money include those who have been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia.

Long-term Effects of Repeated NFL Concussions

Researchers with the Department of Veterans Affairs and Boston University have currently identified the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in the brains of 96 percent of the deceased former NFL players they’ve examined. The researchers believe that CTE stems from repeated head trauma and can lead to memory loss, depression, and dementia. Even more alarming is that 40% of the brains that tested positive for CTE were from offensive and defensive linemen. The researchers felt this fact supported earlier research suggesting that it is the repetitive minor head traumas that NFL players suffer on every play which pose the most risk to players and not the violent collisions which lead to concussions.

Dr. Ann McKee, the director and chief of neuropathology at the VA Boston Healthcare System, said these research figures are “remarkably consistent” with past research done by the group which suggested a link between football and long-term brain disease.

While CTE can only be officially diagnosed posthumously, potential symptoms could include a gradual deterioration in mental capabilities. There is the potential for symptoms of Parkinson’s disease to appear as well as dementia. Other severe neurological disorders associated with repeated blows to the head include ALS and Alzheimer’s disease.
