Brentwood California Police Department Settles Sexual Assault Lawsuit for $1 Million

Brentwood California Police Settles Sexual Assault LawsuitIn May 2019, a sexual assault lawsuit was filed against a former Brentwood police officer. The claim alleged that the victim was raped by her superior officer in September 2017 at a Reno Nevada hotel during a conference they were attending for police training. In November 2017 the woman filed an internal claim with the Brentwood police department in California. However, at the time, she did not pursue criminal charges citing a ‘fear it would be too much to handle emotionally’. When the Brentwood California police chief and captain were made aware, they opened a “supervisory inquiry” instead of an internal affairs investigation.

The details of the complaint were stifled by California’s Senate Bill No. 1421 which only allows for the release of a police officer’s records when the sustained sexual assault complaint is against a civilian, not a member of the police department. Moreover, the Brentwood California city manager declined to discuss the allegations specifically but noted the Brentwood police department takes them “extremely seriously.”

While the details of what proceeded after the May 2019 lawsuit was filed are largely unknown, what we do know is that the city of Brentwood agreed to pay $1 million to settle the claim with the former female officer. The settlement was in exchange for ending claims against all parties and the lawsuit being dropped.
