Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid, & Protonix Kidney Damage Lawsuits
FDA Safety Announcement for Acid Reflux Drugs
In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released two separate drug safety communications regarding Proton Pump Inhibitors. The first safety communication stated that prolonged use of PPIs could cause low magnesium, levels. Low magnesium levels can cause muscle spasms, irregular heartbeat and seizures. A low magnesium level warning was added to the labels of prescription PPIs. The second safety communication in 2011 stated that there was a possible increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine with prolonged use of PPIs. Patients with the highest risk of these fractures used higher doses of PPIs and also used them for a year or more.
Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid, & Protonix Side Effects
Proton Pump Inhibitors work by reducing the amount of stomach acid produced in the body. They can be prescribed by a doctor or purchased over-the-counter to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach and small intestine ulcers, and inflammation of the esophagus. However, long-term use of PPIs may lead to an increased risk of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure. One study published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology found that PPI use accounted for a 28 percent increased risk of developing kidney disease compared to those using alternative methods to suppress stomach acid.
If you believe use of a Proton Pump Inhibitor caused you or a loved to develop any of the following, please call our firm:
- Kidney Failure/Renal Transplant
- Acute Interstitial Nephritis
- Chronic Kidney Disease
