J&J’s Baby Powder Problem

Talcum Powder ProblemBloomberg released an investigatory report regarding the potential link between long term use of talcum powder in the genital area and ovarian cancer in women. J&J has been selling its Baby Powder for over 100 years, yet there had never been a discussion concerning ovarian cancer until a British study done in 1971 found talc particles “deeply embedded” in 10 of 13 ovarian tumors. Since then, numerous other studies have gone on to show there may be a link between long term genital use of the product and ovarian cancer. The report also illustrates that J&J deliberately marketed its Baby Powder for use by women, particularly minority women. For its part, J&J continues to tout the safety of its products and argues that the “statistical links” between talcum powder and ovarian cancer are “weak and based on unreliable data.”
